UQ has deemed the Rangeland Australia initiative as unviable with current student numbers at an all time low. It is set to close at the end of May which is a sad end to an organisation which provided a great service in coordinating and delivering the excellent courses we have studied over the years. Where does this leave current students and those who hoped to continue their studies over time? I have found the RA course delivery, both externally and remote intensive, an excellent avenue to share experiences and to learn form others undertaking the courses. It will be missed. The fact that there has been no mention of this planned closure in any rural media is a pretty sad end to such a great initiative of John Taylor and his support staff over the years. He and Rangeland Australia deserve better - at least some recognition that this course allowed remote and regional students from all over Australia, and the world, an opportunity to undertake post graduate study - to grow and learn.

Totally agree Gerry, both the initiative and John & his staff deserve better.
A misguided decision by UQ I believe.

As a graduate of the Rangeland Australia postgraduate programme I too am shocked and distressed at the demise of this great iniiative. There is a great need for educational opportunities for those of us who do not live in metropolitan areas in Australia. Generally our landholders have a great deal of knowledge about the rangelands in which we live and particularly of their particular "patch". One aspect of the closure of Rangelands Australia at UQ which will be missed is the opportunity it peovided for these knowledgable landholders to gain a high quality and well recognised post graduate qualificaion which gaves them credability when "discussing" environmental and ecological issues with the more extreme "green" people who tend to discount our knowledge unless it is recognised at tertiary level.

agree fully - we recently caught up with John Taylor and it is a sad day for remote area tertiary education to see this excellent initiative fold.
